About Edisto

Edisto consists of two separate islands divided by river, tidal creek, and marsh. Encompassing a combined 46,000 acres Edisto Beach and Edisto Island are not only separated by water but county lines. Edisto Island is part of Charleston County; Edisto Beach, though not connected by land, was annexed into Colleton County in March of 1975.

With a history spanning from before the Edisto Indians, Spanish missionaries, empires of Sea Island cotton followed by espionage and battles of the Civil War, Edisto is steeped in history. Carefully protected by its beloved citizens and preservation society, Edisto has remained largely undeveloped. With a combined population of approximately 3,000 residences Edisto maintains a rural status. Working farms still dot the country side and the massive oak lined HWY 174 is the only road on or off the island. Dotted with small cottages and historic churches the winding road crosses rivers and marsh before suddenly revealing the small community of Edisto Beach.  Running 4.5 miles in length, the vast white sands of Edisto bask in their natural state. With no commercialism, flashing neon signs, looming hotels, or tourist attractions, Edisto is a synonym of peace and quiet.

Given its lack of commercial development, it may seem hard to find entertainment. For those with an adventurous spirit, love of the outdoors, and willingness to explore, Edisto is a paradise found. With bike and hiking trails, state parks, interpretive center, fishing, public boat ramps, birding, history tours and more, Edisto has much to offer the adventure seekers and peaceful vacationers alike.
